A day that changed our lives
But where were you that day…
We were living in Lanzarote. In 1999 I opened a pub called Nancy Spain’s in Puerto del Carmen and after two successful years I decided to employ a full time manager, someone I had known and trusted since I arrived on the island. As a formality we needed to agree and sign contracts. So at 12:30 on the 11th of September 2001 we sat together outside the bar, and just prior to the first news report Terry Green and myself signed employment contracts. Anita was inside the bar watching TV and called us in. We sat together watching in disbelief as the second jet crashed into the towers. Nancy Spain’s was a night bar opening at 8pm till 3:30am, we were a live music venue but cancelled entertainment that night. So many close friends there that night ,
But now 22 years later that day marked a bond between Terry and myself, we were friends and commenced working together. We have been through some wonderful times, some sad times, grief, joy and supported each other through difficult times. Terry was there for me in 2014 when I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma, in February 2022 it was my turn to help and encourage Terry when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Sarcoma.
Sometimes a date and time are marked by tragedy but can also create friendships that nothing can destroy.
